{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
