Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Union Leader for ‘Courtesan of Trump’ Remark
The Italian Prime Minister has publicly denounced the leader of the country’s biggest labor union after he referred to her as “the courtesan” of ex-President Donald Trump.
Context of the Controversial Remarks
Maurizio Landini, leading the CGIL union, uttered the words during a television appearance this Tuesday. This occurred after international leaders, including Meloni, attended a peace conference for the Middle East held in Egypt.
The union leader asserted the Prime Minister of “not having lifted a finger” to secure peace in Gaza, saying her involvement was restricted to “acting as Trump’s courtesan”. Luckily, citizens of Italy protested to protect the dignity and honour of this country,” he commented.
Official Reaction
Via an online post on Thursday, the Prime Minister declared that the union chief was clearly blinded by increasing animosity (which is understandable)”. She then post a definition of the term “courtesan”.
“I think most people are aware the primary definition associated with this word, but, for the benefit of people who don’t know, I’m publishing the initial definition located via a quick internet search,” the Prime Minister stated, providing a screenshot that said: “Promiscuous woman, heterosexual; substitute term, prostitute.”
Meloni further condemned her leftwing opponents, noting that for a long time they had admonished us on women’s rights” only to then attack a woman by “labeling her a prostitute”.
Union Leader’s Explanation
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s comments, the union leader maintained that there were “no gender-based slurs” toward the Prime Minister and that his use of “an underling to Trump”.
Via a released message, he explained: “In a 10-minute interview, that is publicly available, to clarify any confusion or twisting of the words, I made it clear what I meant – that Meloni was trailing behind Trump, she attended Trump’s court, she was Trump’s lackey.”
Connection with the US President
The Italian leader has consistently maintained friendly relations with President Trump. In a public address in Egypt, Trump faced the Italian Prime Minister – the lone woman present at the summit – and referred to her as “beautiful”. “In the US, this could be the end of your political career,” he noted. “Still, I am willing to chance it. Do you mind if I say you’re beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”
President Trump subsequently commended her as “an inspiration to all” in concerning the English edition of her book, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which features a foreword by Donald Trump Jr..
Previous Incidents
Earlier this year, the Prime Minister also hit back after finding out that doctored photos of her and other prominent Italian women had been shared on a explicit platform, stating she felt revulsion, and showing “solidarity and support to all the women who have been violated, insulted, and offended”.
