Major Online Failure Impacts Numerous Websites and Applications
A widespread online outage has affected many sites and applications around the world, as users noting issues getting online following issues at the web hosting service.
The affected platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed services like its key e-commerce site and the Ring home security firm.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems reaching the HM Revenue and Customs site on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring customers took to online platforms to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, accounts of disruptions on specific apps ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.
The company stated that the issue originated in the eastern region of the America at Amazon Web Services, a division that supplies crucial online backbone for numerous businesses, who rent out space on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest online services platform.
Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The ripple effect seemed to hit services around the world, with the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the identical platforms in multiple continents.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors internet outages, also reported a rise in issues on the start of the week, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where the company stated the issues originated.
