Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," stated a senior product manager. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your allies on horseback, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a primary applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and get increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] perfect for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The unruly pleasure doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she hints.

In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it needs to become an competitive event right away.

Another significant inclusion in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no necessity to surface for a breath.

The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature appearing in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also notes that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some long-overdue adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can ford waterways while mounted on a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the year-end release of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
