Minister Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This wider security environment highlights the importance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
